My Very Own ‘Mittens’

My Very Own ‘Mittens’, originally uploaded by Doug van Kampen.

Even though I am pleased from the quality that I can achieve from a properly composed and processed HDR image, with a properly exposed photograph using filters and a minimal amount of processing in post, beautiful photographs can be made.

This shot was made by stopping down the glass (Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6) with an 8-stop neutral density filter and a Daryl Benson 3-stop Reverse Neutral Density filter. With the light dropping like a stone and the extreme dynamic range of the scene before me, the only way (besides using HDR) to make an image such as this was to use the tools in my kit.

In all sincerity, if anyone out there has questions regarding the use of filters or technical questions about processing or shooting, please drop me a line and ask away. It gives me great pleasure to pass along what I’ve learned from many others.

All the best to you and thank you so much for visiting! -vK
